If you’re in the mood to dress up some brownies, then it’s time to get wrapped up in the deliciousness of these Mummy Brownies.
Mummy Brownies
Transform ordinary brownies into extraordinary mummies with this simple recipe. Don’t be scared – get the kids involved for a fun and tasty Halloween activity. They’re easy to make and even easier to eat.
Ingredient Line-Up
Baked Brownies – you can bake up a batch of homemade brownies or use your favorite boxed brownie mix. Just be sure to let the brownies cool completely before decorating.
Buttercream – store bought frosting works, however, if you opt to make buttercream from scratch, you’ll need the following: butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract and milk or heavy cream.
Cinnamon – optional, however, I added it to make the bandages look worn.
Candy Eyes – while optional, candy eyes in various sizes add more fun to the brownie.
Red Food Coloring – optional, but red food coloring markers can be used to draw red lines on the candy eyes while red piping gel can be used to create bloody bandages.
Tools Needed
Brownie Pan – you can either use a 9×13” baking pan or squared-shaped treats, use a brownie pan with dividers.
Cooling Racks – let brownies cool down completely on a cooling rack.
Measuring Cups and Spoons – measure ingredients using dry measuring cups, liquid measuring cups and measuring spoons.
Mixer – optional, if you make brownies or buttercream from scratch a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer will be needed.
Mixing Bowls – use mixing bowls to combine ingredients together.
Parchment Paper – optional, but parchment paper can be used to line the bottom of a 9×13” baking pan. Cooking spray can be used with both types of brownie pans, too.
Pastry Bag, Coupler and Piping Tip – use a pastry bag fitted with a basket weave tip to make your mummy brownies. You can use a coupler if you want to change the tip to create different thicknesses of lines.
Spatula – use a silicone spatula to mix brownie and buttercream ingredients together and for scraping down the sides of the mixing bowl.
Brownies and Buttercream
While I prefer to bake from scratch, there are times when a store-bought mix and frosting are easier to use. So, if you opt to use a brownie mix and premade frosting, then go for it! Just be sure to read labels if you need to avoid specific allergens. Whether you use a brownie recipe or box mix, bake up a batch of brownies according to the recipe or box instructions. Let them cool completely before decorating.
If using premade frosting, scoop all the frosting into a bowl and mix it with a whisk. This will create extra volume and almost double the amount of frosting. For added flavor and visual appeal, mix in a little bit of cinnamon to the frosting. This will give the buttercream bandages a worn look to them.
Get Ready to Decorate
Before decorating your mummy brownies it’s best to have everything set to go. If you decide to use red eyes, get started with those first. Take your food-safe marker and create squiggly lines around the eyes.
Next, get your pastry bag filled with buttercream. To start, open the pastry bag and cut off a small section from the bottom for the tip. If using a coupler, place that inside the bag first, then attach the piping tip. No tip, no problem. Just cut a small section off the bottom of the pastry bag and draw thick lines on the brownie.
Once your tip is in place, put the pastry bag into a small cup and fold the bag over the cup. This will hold the bag for you, making it easier to fill. Scoop some frosting into the bag and remove from the cup. Twist the top of the bag to prevent the frosting from coming out of the top.
Creating Your Mummy Masterpieces
Now that the brownies are cooled and the pastry bag is ready, the fun part begins – creating your mummy masterpieces. There are no right or wrong ways to decorate, so let your imagination go wild. Not sure where to start? Here are a couple of creative ways for you to decorate your mummy brownies.
Mummy Bandages – if using the basket weave tip, I like to use the smooth side of the tip (so there is no weave texture). If you’re not using a tip, then pipe lines to create the mummy bandages. Start making lines at the top of your brownies and work your way down, overlapping the lines a little to look like the brownie is wrapped in bandages.
Spooky Eyes – place large and/or small candy eyes on top of the brownie for added dimension. To make your brownie spookier, draw red lines onto your eyes first using a red food-safe marker.
Bloody Bandages – for an even spookier brownie, use red piping gel to create drips of blood on a few of the bandages.
Perfectly Spooky Treats
Since the mummy bandages are made of frosting, it’s best to decorate these perfectly spooky treats close to serving time. If you can’t wait to decorate, just store them in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator. Let them come to room temperature about an hour before serving so the frosting can soften up slightly.
These mummy brownies, with their creamy frosting bandages and creepy eyes, are a spooktacular addition to any Halloween gathering. Looking for more Halloween fun? Try these Ghostly Cupcakes for another frightfully delicious treat.
