Menu Planning: Winter Comfort Foods

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, meal planning can feel like just another task on an endless to-do list. However, menu planning can help transform your eating habits, save you time, and possibly money when grocery shopping.

Why Menu Planning?

Why plan a menu for the week or even the month? To say goodbye to mealtime chaos and hello to stress-free dinners! Menu planning is your ticket to a more organized and enjoyable kitchen experience. From saving time to embracing healthier choices, menu planning will help transform your time in the kitchen, allowing you to make some great meals, and maybe even dessert.

Six Benefits of Menu Planning

  1. Time Efficiency: say goodbye to the dreaded question, “What’s for dinner?” Menu planning streamlines your grocery shopping and preparation, allowing you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying your meals.
  2. Cost Savings: by planning your meals, you can create a shopping list with specific ingredients. For me, this reduces the likelihood of impulse purchases. This not only saves money but also minimizes food waste.
  3. Healthier Choices: planning your menu in advance empowers you to make healthier food choices. This makes it easier to create a more balanced and nutritious diet, incorporating a variety of food groups and minimizing convenience meals or fast food.
  4. Reduced Stress: knowing what’s on the menu for the week eliminates the stress of last-minute decisions. It also provides a sense of control and organization in your daily life.
  5. Culinary Creativity: menu planning encourages creativity in the kitchen. You can experiment with new recipes, flavors, and even new cooking techniques.
  6. Family Bonding: involve family members in the menu planning process. It’s an opportunity to discuss preferences, share ideas, and in turn, create meals that you know everyone will eat.

Winter Comforts: Themed Menu Ideas for January

To help with my own meal planning, I’ve created this monthly blog feature where a sample themed menu will be posted each month that aims to inspire meal ideas.

For January, comfort foods felt like a good place to start. Keep the theme going all month long, making it easier to brainstorm meal ideas. And, bonus tip: when I know certain nights will be crazy, I’ll double a recipe so we still enjoy a home-cooked meal for those busier weeknights, as we can quickly warm up leftovers and skip the drive-thru.

Monday: Hearty Soup & Sandwich Night

Make Mondays your soup and sandwich nights. These combos are sure to please any pick eater. Pair with a salad and cookies for dessert, like these Chocolate/Red Velvet White Chocolate Chip Cookies.

  • Creamy Tomato Basil Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup with Egg & Avocado Sandwiches
  • Hearty Potato Soup with Ham & Cheese Sandwiches
  • Minestrone Soup with Garlic Breadsticks

Tuesday: Taco Tuesday Fiesta

Taco Tuesday is always a crowd-pleaser. Try different meats on your tacos or nachos for a nice flavor variety. And, don’t forget dessert, like homemade Churros.

  • Shredded Chicken Tacos with Black Bean and Corn Salsa
  • Carne Asada Nachos with Spanish Rice
  • Cheese & Veggie Quesadillas with Black Bean Soup

Wednesday: Comfort Food Classics

Comfort foods are perfect for boosting your mood, making any of these meals a good choice for that middle-of-the-week feeling. As for dessert, who doesn’t enjoy Pumpkin Pie with their comfort meal?

  • Beef Stew with Root Vegetables
  • Chicken Chili with Cornbread
  • Macaroni and Cheese
  • Classic Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes

Thursday: Pasta Paradise

Pasta is my go-to meal, as you can make it a meatless meal or heartier meal with an added protein. Pair any of these meal options with garlic bread, salad and dessert, like Cannoli Dip.

  • Spaghetti and Meatballs
  • Baked Ziti
  • Pasta Bolognese
  • Vegetable Lasagna

Friday: Slow Cooker Sensations

Friday is a great day to use the slow cooker as you can cook your meal with minimal work. That will allow you to make a nice dessert to go with the meal, like these Apple Pie Bars.

  • Slow-Cooked Pot Roast
  • Pulled Pork Sandwiches
  • Chicken and Dumplings
  • Slow-Cooked Beef Stroganoff

Meal-Time Success

Menu planning is a powerful tool that brings order, efficiency, and joy to your kitchen. By taking the time to plan your meals, you’re not only nourishing your body but also creating a space for culinary exploration and hopefully, some family bonding, too. Allow your menu to be as creative as you can and even try new foods. Check back each month for more menu planning and meal ideas that will aid you in creating delicious and well-planned meals for you and your family.
