Looking for a fun and spooky Halloween treat that’s allergy-friendly and easy to make? These Allergy-Friendly Mummy Marshmallows are a quick, no-bake treat that’s perfect for parties, class celebrations or “You’ve Been Boo’d” bags. With just a few simple ingredients, you can turn regular marshmallows into adorable mummies that everyone will love. Mummy marshmallows are kid-friendly, fun to decorate and can easily be made egg-free, nut-free, gluten-free and dairy-free. They’re a great choice for anyone who wants a festive Halloween dessert without the oven.
Why You’ll Love These Mummy Marshmallows
- No baking required. You only need a few ingredients.
- Perfect for kids. Easy enough for little bakers to help with dipping and decorating.
- Great for gifting. Wrap them in small bags for parties or treat exchanges.
- Allergy-friendly options. Easily adaptable to suit your family’s needs.
Ingredients You’ll Need (and Why)
Marshmallows: use store-bought large marshmallows or allergy-friendly marshmallows that are free from nuts, eggs, gluten, gelatin, corn syrup and artificial colors/flavors.
Vanilla Candy Coating/Bark: a candy coating/bark or melting wafers is easier to work with than tempering chocolate.
Candy Eyes (optional): add a mummy face with candy eyes or with an edible food marker.
Helpful Baking Tools
Cookie Sheet: line a cookie sheet with parchment paper to place dipped marshmallows on to dry. Or, use a cake pop stand.
Microwave-Safe Bowl: a microwave-safe bowl or a candy melting pot works well for melting chocolate.
Spatula: a small silicone spatula works best for stirring and drizzling melted chocolate.
Cake Pop Sticks or Straws: use cake pop sticks or Halloween-themed paper straws for an added festive touch.
Bags: wrap mummy marshmallows in small bags for gifting.
Tips for Dipping Marshmallows Like a Pro
Make dipping easier by trying the following suggested tips for marshmallow mummy success.
- Melt chocolate slowly. Start with 30 seconds in the microwave, stir, then heat in 15-second intervals until smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate.
- Dip the straw first. Coat one end of the straw in chocolate, insert it into the marshmallow and let it harden before dipping the whole marshmallow.
- Shake off excess chocolate. Gently shake or tap to remove the excess chocolate for a smooth, even finish.
- Let dry completely. Allow each marshmallow to dry completely before wrapping or storing.
How to Make Mummy Marshmallows
Making these mummy marshmallows is quick and fun, and no need to worry about mistakes as they’ll just make your mummies look more authentic! Check the recipe card for detailed instructions, including exact ingredient measurements.
1. Carefully melt the candy coating/chocolate.
2. Cut the straws in half.
3. Dip one end of the straw into the chocolate.
4. Insert dipped end into marshmallow.
5. Place on a cookie sheet to harden.
6. Dip marshmallow in chocolate. Tap excess off.
7. Drizzle mummy “bandages” and add eyes.
8. Let fully set before eating, gifting or storing.
Fun Variations and Allergy-Friendly Swaps
No need to be scared of these mummies! They’re easy to personalize with flavor or design twists or allergy-safe swaps.
- Mini Mummies: using toothpicks instead of straws, dip mini marshmallows for mini mummies.
- Dusty Mummy: add a sprinkle of cinnamon or pumpkin spice to the melted chocolate for a “dusty” looking mummy.
- Ghosts: draw eyes and a mouth with a black edible food marker once marshmallows are fully dried.
- Double-Dipped: stack and dip two marshmallows together onto one straw for a taller mummy (or ghost).
- S’mores: make a batch of s’mores dipped marshmallows instead by using a chocolate candy coating/bark or melting wafers and crushed graham crackers.
Allergy-Friendly Substitutions
If avoiding a certain allergen, consider the following substitutions. I suggest trying one swap at a time since this recipe has not been tested with any of these substitutions.
Allergy Tip: Always read labels carefully. Some candy coatings or bark and decorations may contain hidden allergens like dairy and/or soy while others may be made on the same line as nuts, for example.
- Egg-Free, Nut-Free & Gluten-Free Marshmallows: swap out regular marshmallows for allergy-friendly marshmallows that are free of egg, nuts and gluten, artificial flavors/colors and contain no gelatin or corn syrup.
- Dairy-Free: swap regular vanilla candy melts or bark for dairy-free white chocolate chips.
- Soy-Free: choose soy-free coating or melt soy-free chocolate bars for dipping.
How to Store Mummy Marshmallows
Once dry, these no-bake mummy marshmallows can be made 1-2 weeks ahead of time. Here’s how to store them properly for freshness:
- On a Countertop. Store marshmallows at room temperature in an airtight container and keep away from direct sunlight. Before storing, layer the container with parchment paper or individually wrap to prevent sticking.
- In the Fridge. While marshmallows can be stored in the refrigerator, they should be fully defrosted before serving. Keep them in the container while defrosting so any condensation that may appear on the chocolate can dissipate.
- In the Freezer. Dipped marshmallows can be frozen for up to three months. Freeze on a parchment-lined cookie sheet for one hour, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Thaw at room temperature before eating.
